Mamgu's (Grandmother's) Bread and Butter Pudding

6 slices of raisin bread cubed into 3/4 inch pieces
2 cups milk 1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 cup sugar 2 eggs
2 tbs. butter Pinch of salt
Nutmeg  

1. Place raisin bread cubes into a buttered shallow baking dish; set aside.

2. Heat milk and butter until hot and butter is melted (do not boil).

3. Beat eggs with sugar, vanilla, and salt.  Add hot milk mixture, stirring constantly; pour over raisin bread.  Allow mixture to stand five minutes.  Sprinkle with nutmeg.

4. Bake uncovered at 350° for about 50 minutes or until custard is set. 

Serve warm or cold.  4-6 servings.
